Dream machines?

While installing Mac OSX 10.2 (~2002) on a crusty MacBook Pro on this late-2022 afternoon, it occurred to me that computers were not yet evil at that point on the timeline. Apple’s installer was pretty forward about requiring registration info, and threatened to report home to the mothership as soon as I connected to the Internet, but I would not have been concerned that the system might try to report on every binary I run, embed advertising into core OS functions, or any of the other malware-like activity that society seems to accept from system vendors today.

I can’t help but feel that the pendulum is going to swing the other way, and possibly quite soon.
